St John Uganda Volunteer Wing – St John Ambulance

The voluntary wing of St John Uganda is St John Ambulance a well-structured organization dedicated to first aid services, home-based care, public health sensitization, and emergency response.

Leadership Structure

The volunteer wing is headed by the Commander, who also serves as the Chairman of the St John Council.

The leadership structure is designed to ensure efficient coordination and oversight of all voluntary activities;

  • Commander / Chairman of the Council- The overall head of St John Ambulance.
  • Chief Commissioner- Assists the Commander in managing volunteer activities.
  • Deputy Commissioner- Oversees all St John Ambulance first aid groups.
  • Assistant Chief Commissioner- Manages all nursing divisions within St John.

Regional and divisional – level organization

To ensure effective operations across the country, St John Ambulance is structured into regional and divisional units:

Regions: Uganda is divided into five regions for better management:

Central, Western, Eastern, Northern, North -west.

Each region is headed by a regional Superintendent, responsible for overseeing all St John divisions within their area. Each division is led by a Division Superintendent, who ensures proper coordination of activities at the community level.

Voluntary activities

First aid services at public gatherings, sports events, religious functions, and emergencies.

Home-based care nursing, providing support to the sick and elderly.

Public health sensitization, educating communities on disease prevention, hygiene and maternal health.

Disaster response and rescue operations, especially during epidemics, floods, landslides and mass gatherings.

Membership and uniformed identity

St John Uganda currently has over 24 divisions spread across the country.

All members of St John Ambulance are uniformed, ensuring easy identification during service delivery.

Volunteers receive specialized training in first aid, emergency response, homebased care nursing, and disaster preparedness.
