The Order’s History

Jerusalem and the Crusades

The exact date when the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem first came into being is unknown although it was about 1070, when a hospice - a place of care - was established in Jerusalem by monks from a neighbouring Benedictine abbey to care for the growing number of Christians making the long and dangerous pilgrimage to the holy city.

St John Worldwide

St John is a major international charity which provides first aid, health care and support services in over 30 countries around the world. Together they make up the Order of St John, which is accredited to the United Nations.

The Order's charitable work is carried out by the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and national St John organisations worldwide – with volunteers and staff of over 245,000.

Our Objectives

  • To encourage all that makes for the spiritual and moral strengthening of mankind in accordance with the first great principle of the order embodied in the motto “ Pro Fide” meaning “For the Faith”.
  • To encourage and promote all works of humanity and charity for the relief of persons in sickness, distress, suffering, or danger without any distinction in terms of race, class or religion in accordance with the second great principle of the order embodied in motto , “Pro Utilitate Hominum”, that is “In the service of Humanity”.

History

St John Uganda is part of the International Order of St John operating in over 30 countries worldwide with a coordination office in London, United Kingdom. The St. John Ambulance Association and the Brigade (short title “St. John Ambulance”) were the single Foundation of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (referred to as “The Order”) The St. John Ambulance Association was established in Uganda in 1930 and a St.

Background

The Order of St John is operating internationally in over 30 countries worldwide with a coordinating office in London, United Kingdom. Its origin in Jerusalem when a hospice - place of care was established by the Nuns and Monks to provide care to the pilgrims to the holy city of Jerusalem in 1070. St. John Ambulance was established in United Kingdom in 1887 during the industrial revolution to provide First aid and ambulance services to the injured persons at work.
